About Us

We believe the individual impact of football players cannot be measured by vanity metrics like goals, passes, tackles won or possession. Real team players influence besides their own metrics especially their team members, their opponents and as a final output the game result directly and indirectly. This is what Football GAP is about.

Game Review

In a surprising turn of events in the Bundesliga, Hamburger SV secured a 2-1 victory over VfL Wolfsburg on Saturday. The match, part of Gameweek 25, saw Hamburger SV overturn pre-match expectations, as Wolfsburg were considered the favorites given their home advantage and recent form. The game began with Wolfsburg taking an early lead through Christian Eriksen (GAP -1.1%), who found the back of the net in the 22nd minute. However, Hamburger SV responded strongly, with Luka Vušković (GAP +2.7%) equalizing in the 33rd minute. The decisive moment came in the 58th minute when Jean-Luc Dompe (GAP -0.7%) scored the winning goal for Hamburger SV, capitalizing on a defensive lapse by Wolfsburg. Tactically, Wolfsburg's manager made several changes during the match, bringing in Lovro Majer, Mohammed Amoura, Maximilian Arnold, and Kento Shiogai. These substitutions were likely an attempt to inject fresh energy and creativity into the team, but they ultimately failed to alter the outcome. Hamburger SV's head coach also made strategic changes, introducing Yussuf Poulsen, Damion Downs, Giorgi Gocholeishvili, Warmed Omari, and Fábio Vieira, which helped solidify their lead. A significant turning point was the red card shown to Marius Muller of Wolfsburg in the 90th minute, which effectively ended any hopes of a late comeback for the home side. This disciplinary issue highlighted the frustrations within the Wolfsburg camp as they struggled to regain control of the match. This result has significant implications for both teams. Hamburger SV will be buoyed by this victory, which could serve as a catalyst for a strong finish to the season. For Wolfsburg, the defeat is a setback in their pursuit of higher league positions, and they will need to regroup quickly to maintain their momentum in the Bundesliga. Post-match reactions highlighted the resilience of Hamburger SV, with players and fans alike celebrating a hard-fought win. The result underscores the unpredictable nature of the Bundesliga, where even the underdogs can triumph against the odds.

What is GAP?

What is Plus Minus Goals (G±)?

Plus Minus Goals (G±) is the average goal difference per game while the player was on the pitch. A value above 0 indicates that the team rather wins, a value below 0 means his team concedes more goals than they score when the player is on the pitch. As an example, if the player's team is winning 3:1 the goal difference is +2, if the player's team is loosing 0:1, the goal difference is -1. It is a pure metric which is barely adjusted for circumstances to purely show the goal difference.

What is GAP?

GAP (Game Advantage Percentage) shows the percentage gap between a player and the average league player. It answers the question: How much does a player improve or worsen a team's performance? It is based on high level game data with a focus on the impact on the goal difference (G±) from the last 50 games of a player. Besides that, GAP goes further and considers game context by involving data from the player and all other players who are at the same time on the pitch, no matter if teammates or opponents. Football GAP - the individual metric for team players.
