About Us

We believe the individual impact of football players cannot be measured by vanity metrics like goals, passes, tackles won or possession. Real team players influence besides their own metrics especially their team members, their opponents and as a final output the game result directly and indirectly. This is what Football GAP is about.

Game Review

Manchester City edged out Newcastle United 2-1 in a tightly contested Premier League match at the Etihad Stadium. The victory was largely expected given City's strong form and home advantage, but Newcastle put up a commendable fight. The match began with Manchester City asserting their dominance early on. Nico O'Reilly opened the scoring in the 14th minute, capitalizing on a defensive lapse from Newcastle. Just eight minutes later, O'Reilly doubled City's lead, showcasing his clinical finishing ability. Newcastle responded quickly, with Lewis Hall pulling one back in the 22nd minute, setting the stage for a competitive encounter. In terms of tactical adjustments, Manchester City made a single change to their lineup from the previous game, bringing in Omar Marmoush for Phil Foden. This change seemed to pay off as City maintained their attacking fluidity. Newcastle, on the other hand, made three changes, introducing Sandro Tonali, Nick Woltemade, and Lewis Hall, while Harvey Barnes, Sven Botman, and Bruno Guimarães were left out. These changes were likely influenced by injuries and tactical considerations, as Newcastle sought to bolster their midfield and attacking options. Key performances were noted from Ruben Dias (GAP +9.9%), who was instrumental in City's defense, and Erling Haaland (GAP +5.6%), who, despite not scoring, was a constant threat to Newcastle's backline. Gianluigi Donnarumma (GAP +5.4%) also played a crucial role, making several important saves to keep City ahead. For Newcastle, Dan Burn (GAP +3.0%) and Nick Pope (GAP +1.3%) were notable performers, with Burn particularly effective in aerial duels and Pope making key saves to prevent a wider margin of defeat. The result sees Manchester City solidify their position in the upper echelons of the Premier League table, continuing their pursuit of the title. Newcastle, while disappointed with the loss, can take positives from their performance, especially their resilience and ability to compete against top-tier opposition. This match serves as a reminder of the competitive nature of the Premier League, where even the favorites must remain vigilant against spirited challengers.

What is GAP?

What is Plus Minus Goals (G±)?

Plus Minus Goals (G±) is the average goal difference per game while the player was on the pitch. A value above 0 indicates that the team rather wins, a value below 0 means his team concedes more goals than they score when the player is on the pitch. As an example, if the player's team is winning 3:1 the goal difference is +2, if the player's team is loosing 0:1, the goal difference is -1. It is a pure metric which is barely adjusted for circumstances to purely show the goal difference.

What is GAP?

GAP (Game Advantage Percentage) shows the percentage gap between a player and the average league player. It answers the question: How much does a player improve or worsen a team's performance? It is based on high level game data with a focus on the impact on the goal difference (G±) from the last 50 games of a player. Besides that, GAP goes further and considers game context by involving data from the player and all other players who are at the same time on the pitch, no matter if teammates or opponents. Football GAP - the individual metric for team players.
