About Us

We believe the individual impact of football players cannot be measured by vanity metrics like goals, passes, tackles won or possession. Real team players influence besides their own metrics especially their team members, their opponents and as a final output the game result directly and indirectly. This is what Football GAP is about.

Game Review

1. FC Köln secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over FSV Mainz 05 in their Bundesliga clash on Saturday, 17 January 2026. The match, part of Gameweek 18, saw Köln overturn an early deficit to claim all three points, a result that aligns with their recent form and expectations. The game began with Mainz taking the lead in the 29th minute through Stefan Bell (GAP +2.6%), who capitalized on a set-piece opportunity. Köln, however, responded strongly in the second half. Ragnar Ache, who came on as a substitute, was the hero for the home side, scoring twice in the 57th and 85th minutes to turn the game on its head. Köln's manager made strategic changes, introducing Ragnar Ache and others from the bench, which proved decisive. Ache's impact was immediate and pivotal, showcasing his knack for finding the net at crucial moments. The home side's lineup saw several changes, with Jan Thielmann, Luca Waldschmidt, Tom Krauß, and Kristoffer Lund Hansen also coming off the bench to influence proceedings. For Mainz, Dominik Kohr (GAP +5.9%) was notable in midfield, contributing significantly to their early control of the game. However, despite their efforts, Mainz could not hold onto their lead, with Köln's tactical adjustments and attacking substitutions proving too much to handle. This victory keeps 1. FC Köln in a competitive position in the Bundesliga table, building on their recent positive performances. Mainz, on the other hand, will need to regroup and address their defensive frailties as they look to improve their standing in the league. Post-match reactions highlighted the resilience of Köln, with fans and pundits praising the tactical acumen displayed by the coaching staff. The result underscores Köln's potential to challenge higher up the table as the season progresses.

What is GAP?

What is Plus Minus Goals (G±)?

Plus Minus Goals (G±) is the average goal difference per game while the player was on the pitch. A value above 0 indicates that the team rather wins, a value below 0 means his team concedes more goals than they score when the player is on the pitch. As an example, if the player's team is winning 3:1 the goal difference is +2, if the player's team is loosing 0:1, the goal difference is -1. It is a pure metric which is barely adjusted for circumstances to purely show the goal difference.

What is GAP?

GAP (Game Advantage Percentage) shows the percentage gap between a player and the average league player. It answers the question: How much does a player improve or worsen a team's performance? It is based on high level game data with a focus on the impact on the goal difference (G±) from the last 50 games of a player. Besides that, GAP goes further and considers game context by involving data from the player and all other players who are at the same time on the pitch, no matter if teammates or opponents. Football GAP - the individual metric for team players.
