About Us

We believe the individual impact of football players cannot be measured by vanity metrics like goals, passes, tackles won or possession. Real team players influence besides their own metrics especially their team members, their opponents and as a final output the game result directly and indirectly. This is what Football GAP is about.

Game Review

In a tightly contested La Liga encounter, Real Oviedo secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Girona, thanks to a solitary goal from Ilyas Chaira (GAP -1.7%) in the 74th minute. This result was somewhat unexpected given Girona's higher standing in the league and their recent form, but Real Oviedo capitalized on their home advantage to clinch the win. The match was largely balanced, with both teams struggling to create clear-cut chances in the first half. Girona, featuring Marc-Andre ter Stegen (GAP +7.0%) in goal, managed to keep Real Oviedo at bay until Chaira broke the deadlock with a well-taken strike. The goal came after sustained pressure from the home side, who had been gradually growing into the game. Real Oviedo's lineup saw several changes, with Lucas Ahijado, Leander Dendoncker, Thiago Fernández, Santi Cazorla, and Nicolás Fonseca coming off the bench to make an impact. Girona also made tactical adjustments, introducing Christian Stuani, Claudio Echeverri, Axel Witsel, and Hugo Rincón in an attempt to turn the tide. From a tactical standpoint, Real Oviedo's defensive solidity, led by David Carmo (GAP -2.3%), was crucial in maintaining their lead. Girona's Viktor Tsygankov (GAP -3.3%) struggled to find space and influence the game as he might have hoped. Post-match reactions highlighted Real Oviedo's resilience and tactical discipline, which were key in securing the three points. This victory provides a significant boost to Real Oviedo's campaign, potentially lifting them from the lower echelons of the table and building momentum for upcoming fixtures. For Girona, this defeat could be a wake-up call, as they need to reassess their strategies to maintain their position in the upper half of the league. The result underscores the unpredictable nature of La Liga, where even the underdogs can triumph with the right approach.

What is GAP?

What is Plus Minus Goals (G±)?

Plus Minus Goals (G±) is the average goal difference per game while the player was on the pitch. A value above 0 indicates that the team rather wins, a value below 0 means his team concedes more goals than they score when the player is on the pitch. As an example, if the player's team is winning 3:1 the goal difference is +2, if the player's team is loosing 0:1, the goal difference is -1. It is a pure metric which is barely adjusted for circumstances to purely show the goal difference.

What is GAP?

GAP (Game Advantage Percentage) shows the percentage gap between a player and the average league player. It answers the question: How much does a player improve or worsen a team's performance? It is based on high level game data with a focus on the impact on the goal difference (G±) from the last 50 games of a player. Besides that, GAP goes further and considers game context by involving data from the player and all other players who are at the same time on the pitch, no matter if teammates or opponents. Football GAP - the individual metric for team players.
