About Us

We believe the individual impact of football players cannot be measured by vanity metrics like goals, passes, tackles won or possession. Real team players influence besides their own metrics especially their team members, their opponents and as a final output the game result directly and indirectly. This is what Football GAP is about.

Game Review

FSV Mainz 05 secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over FC Heidenheim in their Bundesliga clash on Tuesday, 13 January 2026. The match, played at Mainz's home ground, saw the hosts take control early on, with Silvan Widmer (GAP -2.1%) opening the scoring in the 30th minute. Nadiem Amiri (GAP +4.2%) doubled Mainz's lead shortly after the break, finding the net in the 49th minute. Heidenheim managed to pull one back through Stefan Schimmer in the 60th minute, but it wasn't enough to overturn the deficit. Mainz's performance was bolstered by key contributions from their standout players. Dominik Kohr (GAP +5.9%) was instrumental in midfield, providing stability and breaking up Heidenheim's attacks effectively. Armindo Sieb (GAP +5.6%) also impressed, offering creativity and energy in the attacking third. Heidenheim, despite their efforts, struggled to impose themselves on the game. Their defensive frailties were evident, with Patrick Mainka (GAP -3.8%) and Jonas Föhrenbach (GAP -2.6%) unable to contain Mainz's attacking threats. The introduction of Stefan Schimmer, who scored their only goal, provided a brief spark, but it was too little, too late. Both teams made several changes to their lineups. Mainz's manager opted for a fresh approach, bringing in Lennard Maloney, Arnaud Nordin, Paul Nebel, and Kacper Potulski as substitutes. Meanwhile, Heidenheim's head coach introduced Yannik Wagner, Stefan Schimmer, Adrian Beck, Sirlord Conteh, and Mathias Honsak to try and change the game's dynamics. This victory is crucial for Mainz as they look to climb the Bundesliga table. The win provides them with much-needed momentum, potentially setting the stage for a strong second half of the season. For Heidenheim, the defeat highlights areas that need improvement, particularly in defense, as they aim to stabilize their form and avoid slipping further down the standings.

What is GAP?

What is Plus Minus Goals (G±)?

Plus Minus Goals (G±) is the average goal difference per game while the player was on the pitch. A value above 0 indicates that the team rather wins, a value below 0 means his team concedes more goals than they score when the player is on the pitch. As an example, if the player's team is winning 3:1 the goal difference is +2, if the player's team is loosing 0:1, the goal difference is -1. It is a pure metric which is barely adjusted for circumstances to purely show the goal difference.

What is GAP?

GAP (Game Advantage Percentage) shows the percentage gap between a player and the average league player. It answers the question: How much does a player improve or worsen a team's performance? It is based on high level game data with a focus on the impact on the goal difference (G±) from the last 50 games of a player. Besides that, GAP goes further and considers game context by involving data from the player and all other players who are at the same time on the pitch, no matter if teammates or opponents. Football GAP - the individual metric for team players.
